Dynamics 365 Commerce

Commerce.Store, e-commerce and loyalty on one platform — when the partner knows retail.

Commerce is Microsoft's answer to the fragmented retail landscape where separate systems for POS, e-commerce, inventory and CRM create duplicate price lists, incorrect stock levels and a customer experience that breaks across channels. The platform is powerful — but exceptionally complex to implement. The difference between a retail project that lifts revenue and one that becomes a nightmare lies in the partner's retail experience: do they know POS, loyalty, campaign logic, BOPIS flows and integration with your logistics partners?

What is Dynamics 365 Commerce

Dynamics 365 Commerce is Microsoft's omnichannel platform for retail and consumer goods — a solution that unifies physical store, e-commerce, mobile and loyalty on a shared data model with a single product catalog, pricing engine and customer profile.

At the core is Commerce Scale Unit, a central data platform that syncs products, prices, inventory and customer data in real time across every channel so that store staff, e-commerce and customer service always see the same picture.

On top sits Commerce POS, a modern point-of-sale solution that works both online and offline with automatic synchronisation. The pricing and promotions engine handles millions of price calculations per day with support for buy-N-pay-M, threshold discounts, mix-and-match, loyalty pricing and affinity-based campaigns. Sites Builder provides drag-and-drop e-commerce or a headless architecture against React/Next.js frontends.

The loyalty program manages points, tiers and benefits tied to a unified customer profile in Dataverse. With Customer Insights, retail chains can build personalised campaigns and AI predictions that drive repeat purchases and lift average basket size.

Commerce is deeply integrated with Finance & Supply Chain Management for accounting, purchasing, inventory and replenishment, making the complete solution particularly strong for retail chains that want to consolidate away from separate POS, warehouse and e-commerce systems — but the implementation is a substantial commitment and requires a partner with documented retail experience.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce

Omnichannel retail on a unified platform

Commerce fits retail chains, fashion and sports brands, grocery, general retail and consumer brands with multiple stores, e-commerce and loyalty needs. The platform is particularly strong for organisations that want to move away from a patchwork architecture with separate systems for POS (NCR, Sitoo), e-commerce (Shopify, Magento), loyalty (Voyado) and ERP — and consolidate onto a Microsoft stack with Finance & Supply Chain Management for logistics and finance.

Worth knowing before you move forward: Commerce is one of the most extensive Dynamics 365 apps and usually requires 9–18 months of implementation for a full-scale retail chain. It is not a plug-and-play e-commerce solution but a complete retail platform — which makes the partner selection critical. Look for partners with references from similar retail segments (fashion, sports, grocery, consumer electronics) rather than general Dynamics 365 consultants.

On the buyer's side

Buyer's manual

Commerce is one of Microsoft's most comprehensive apps — physical store, e-commerce, POS, customer club and the pricing engine all in one platform. The difference between success and a nightmare is the partner's retail experience.

When is it a bad fit?

Scenarios where this product is the wrong tool — or the wrong time.

  • Pure-play D2C e-commerce businesses without physical stores — Shopify or similar is often faster and cheaper to get started with.
  • Smaller chains (under ~10 stores) without a strong IT organisation to run a heavy retail project.
  • Companies not prepared for 9–18 months of implementation and significant process change.
  • Businesses where the POS supplier cannot be replaced within a reasonable timeframe — in which case the unified platform concept will not work.

What gets underestimated?

Areas that routinely become larger and more expensive than expected.

  • Product catalogue, variants, attributes and pricing hierarchies — the data model must be designed before you build anything.
  • Integration with logistics, payments, loyalty and 3rd-party e-commerce if you do not use Sites Builder.
  • In-store POS rollout — hardware, network, training, hypercare and fallback routines.
  • Campaign and pricing logic — threshold discounts, customer club prices, mix-and-match require thorough design and testing.

What does it really cost?

The total cost — beyond the list price in the brochure.

  • Licence per user/month + Commerce Scale Unit + any Cloud Add-ons for transaction volume.
  • Implementation: SEK 2–10 million depending on the number of stores, channels and integrations.
  • In-store hardware (POS stations, receipt printers, payment terminals) and network.
  • Application Management post go-live — Microsoft's two releases per year require regression testing and updates.

What should the partner prove?

Requirements to place on the partner before you sign.

  • At least 2–3 retail references in your category (fashion, sports, groceries, consumer electronics) that have been live for 12+ months.
  • Proven expertise in POS, the pricing engine, loyalty and Sites Builder — not just F&SCM.
  • Concrete pilot strategy: start with 1–3 stores before a full rollout.
  • Clear division of responsibilities between partner, payment provider, logistics and hardware supplier.

What does it really cost?

Commerce is one of Microsoft's most comprehensive Dynamics 365 applications — POS, e-commerce, loyalty and back-office in one. Licence ~SEK 2,000/user/month plus an e-commerce add-on licence (~SEK 38,000/month) for online retail. The implementation is always a major program.

Common cost drivers

These push you above or below the range above.

  • Number of stores, markets and currencies
  • In-store hardware (POS terminals, scanners, scales, drawers)
  • The e-commerce platform and how deeply it needs to be integrated
  • Price and promo logic (complex pricing is a major cost driver)
  • Integrations with WMS, 3PL, payments, customer data, marketing
  • Localisation: tax regulations, receipts, payment methods per market

Ongoing costs after go-live

Rarely shown in the quote — but this is where total cost grows.

  • Application management of the store environment (critical during trading peaks)
  • Hardware agreements and store support
  • Further development of e-commerce and campaign logic
  • AI: Copilot for in-store sales staff, demand forecasting, dynamic pricing

The ranges represent typical partner projects in the Swedish market. A complex industry, numerous integrations, or poor data quality will push a project above the upper limit — and vice versa. Always request a fixed-price discovery phase before signing off on the full project. See also the overall cost guide for Dynamics 365 and price list.
